Students Behavior
Student behavior in schools and classrooms has become one of the most frequently mentioned concerns for school staff members. How students behave can impact the climate and culture of the classroom in profound ways, both positive and negative.
Students no longer come to school with the positive behaviors historically seen in the past. The reasons for this change is varied and includes alterations in the structure of families, increased exposure to violence, increased poverty, and lack of adequate role models. More than ever before schools are being asked to address the lack of acceptable behavior by students of all ages.
Research has shown that we can sort our students into three distinct groups:
- Universal (Primary Prevention)
- Targeted (Secondary Prevention)
- Intensive(Tertiary Prevention)

From www.pbis.org
Universal students, who make up approximately 80% of our school population, are those for whom the typical school and classroom management techniques will work.
Targeted students make up approximately 15% of the school population. These students need interventions that are somewhat more specialized and are time intensive in nature.
Intensive group students make up approximately 5% of the school’s population. These students require involved intervention strategies that go well beyond those for either the Universal or Targeted areas. Many times these students are identified as requiring special education services, but this is not always the case.
This section of the OVEC website is dedicated to addressing the needs of, not only those students identified as Targeted and Intensive students, but those with Universal behavioral needs as well.
As the Behavior Consultant, I am available to come to your school on a request basis to observe and consult on students with challenging behaviors. Additionally, I am available to provide trainings in specific areas that will assist in reducing the number of students identified with Targeted or Intensive needs.
Please do not hesitate to contact me, see top of the page for contact information, if you have questions or concerns regarding a student.
